PALM BAY — For Brian Hamzavi, MD, and Tammy Hamzavi, PA-C, starting their own practice wasn’t their first option.

After moving to Palm Bay, however, they saw a void that needed to be filled, spawning Hammer Orthopedics.

“The practice is something we didn’t initially think we were going to do right off the bat, but it was kind of born out of necessity and a desire to treat the patients the way we would want to be treated,” Dr. Hamzavi said.

Both had traditional medical careers before taking the leap into private practice. For Dr. Hamzavi, the transition took some adjustment.

“Business is something that you don’t typically get in medical education. They touch very little on how to run a business of medicine. We reached the point where we were ready to take the leap, and so far, it’s been the best decision we’ve ever made,” he said.

Tammy’s passion for orthopedics began with personal experience. Growing up with knee injuries and surgeries, she spent a lot of time in physical therapy and ultimately pursued a career in sports medicine.

“I was always in that realm of sports medicine. It was part of my youth, so that’s why I continued to go into it. And I really enjoy it,” she said.

Their paths crossed unexpectedly when Brian sold Tammy a pathology book while she was in physician assistant school and he was applying to medical school.

“I figured it would get to me the quickest because the book was located in Philadelphia and I was in New York at the time,” Tammy said. “Then we started emailing, and it turned into getting to know each other.”

The two began dating long distance, eventually got married, and later moved to Florida, where their practice took root.

“Her being in the field really helps. Some people don’t imagine working together with their partner, but for us, it works,” Dr. Hamzavi said.

While raising two young sons and managing their practice, they’re committed to serving the local community.

“Palm Bay is an rapidly expanding community, and that is one of the reasons we chose it for the practice,” Dr. Hamzavi said.

At Hammer Orthopedics, they treat patients of all ages, providing services that used to require travel to larger cities.

“We’re trying to keep some of that care in the community,” Dr. Hamzavi said. “The patients feel like they have a home to get care, and that’s sometimes lost in bigger health systems.”

Starting their own practice wasn’t easy, but the reward has been worth the challenge.

“The first year is the hardest. The learning curve is steep, but it’s probably the happiest we’ve been professionally,” Dr. Hamzavi said.

The name “Hammer Orthopedics” holds personal meaning for Dr. Hamzavi. Not only was it his nickname in residency, but for a personal, more sentimental reason as well.

“I used to help my father with projects. I have a hammer with ‘father’s helper’ carved into it. It’s one of the cherished things I have left from my father,” he said.

The couple’s values—transparency and compassion—are core to their practice.

“Compassion is important. Being a mom and former athlete, I understand what patients are going through,” Tammy said.

“I value patients’ time. You’ll never always be on time, but I remember going to appointments where you wait two hours. That never happens here,” Dr. Hamzavi said.

Looking to the future, Dr. Hamzavi and Tammy are excited to continue growing their practice and serving the Palm Bay community.

“We’re going to grow significantly from where we are now,” Dr. Hamzavi said.
